[ARCHIVED] 4-30-21 Places that Thrive is First Module in Comprehensive Planning Education Series

Stakeholders are encouraged to share thoughts through a variety of online feedback functions.

Killeen’s development of a new comprehensive plan is a community-wide effort that aims to identify collective values and create a shared vision for the future. Through the involvement of stakeholders, the plan will identify long-term issues and build action items for near-term efforts.

The City of Killeen selected Verdunity to develop the comprehensive plan for its commitment to fiscal sustainability, resource-conscious community building and healthy, equitable neighborhoods. Verdunity’s approach identifies what residents are willing and able to pay for and creates a plan to make meaningful progress to close resource gaps and to cultivate an equitable, vibrant and resilient local economy and neighborhoods.

Verdunity has launched an online civic education program called Cultivate Community. Through a series of nine modules released in the coming weeks, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of what makes communities thrive and the elements needed to cultivate fiscal health and local wealth.

Module 1: Places that Thrive is available to watch now on demand. In this segment, Verdunity President and CEO Kevin Shepherd discusses the purpose of comprehensive planning, the common elements of vibrant communities and what creates fiscal health and resilience.

In addition to participating in the educational program, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to engage in the process by sharing their thoughts through a number of online outlets. Survey #2 asks 10 questions to understand individual values and visions for Killeen. An idea wall asks participants to post their thoughts and react to those left by others. An interactive map allows general areas or specific locations to be pinpointed by placing markers to indicate areas in need of improvement, protection, redevelopment and more. Finally, seven forums ask stakeholders to join the conversation the specific topics of Economic Development, Housing and Neighborhoods, Available Resources, Downtown, Land Use, Mobility and Quality of Life.

Everyone with a personal or business interest in Killeen is a stakeholder whose feedback is important to shaping the comprehensive plan. The input received is critical to establishing priorities for the investment of public resources to ultimately meet community-wide goals.

Module 1 and all online feedback features are available at www.KilleenTexas.gov/CompPlan. Stay informed throughout the process by opting-in for updates.
