Parks and Recreation 5 philosophies

  • Everyone Plays: Our program goal is for all kids to play. Each program (sport) has an allotted amount of playing time based on roster size that every player must be provided.
  • Balanced Team: Each season we administer a Player Ability Assessment (PAA) and a player draft to make rosters as evenly balanced as possible. This practice is fair among players and teams, while creating teams with an equal ability to compete.
  • Open Registration: Our programs or activities are open to ALL children between the ages of 3-15, regardless of gender, race, religion, and/or socioeconomic status.
  • Positive Coaching: Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and parents, and ultimately leads to more skilled and motivated players.
  • Good Sportsmanship: We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect, rather than a win-at-all-costs mentality. Our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of Killeen Parks and Recreation  programs.

Player Ability Assessments (PAA)

Player Ability Assessments or PAA is a program designed to assess the fundamental skills of each player. PAA are for divisions (8U – 15U) in each sport. PAA are customarily held 2-3 weeks before the first practice. Registrants will run 3-4 drills specific to the sport and be graded by volunteer coaches, staff, or local High School players that participate in the same sport. PAA participants will be graded on a scale of 1-5 (5=best value, 4=good value, 3=average value, 2=needs improvement, and 1=lowest value). The atmosphere of the PAA is very relaxed, so players should not have undue pressure from parents/guardians. During the coach’s meeting a Player Draft will be conducted, and coaches will draft players based on the grade received at the PAA. The goal of this process is to build equally competitive teams in each division with similar average scores.

Registrants are highly encouraged to attend PAA. Those that do not attend will receive a “U” ungraded.

COACHES

Each team is led by a volunteer coach. The function of a coach, at any level, is to develop, nurture the love of the game, and educate children and athletes through participation in recreation competition. Each athlete should be treated with the utmost respect, and his or her welfare should always be considered in decisions by the coach.

Becoming a coach involves running practices and games. If you are interested in making an impact in your community opt to becoming a coach: https://killeentexas.seamlessdocs.com/f/VolunteerApplication
