Children and adults can benefit from developing this life skill.
The City of Killeen is offering swim lessons this summer for children and adults at the Family Aquatic Center. Registration is $45 and is open for all sessions.
Each session lasts two weeks, and lessons are conducted mornings or evenings Tuesday through Friday. Sessions at all levels start June 4 and 18 and July 2, 16 and 30.
Swim lessons are offered in four levels and can be taken individually or consecutively. There is no prerequisite for Level 1, but Levels 2 through 4 require demonstration of skills from the previous levels.
Level 1 is open to 4 and 5 year olds and is an introduction to water skills. It develops comfort with water through basic water safety skills including entry and exit, proper use of a life jacket and water submersion. Swimmers also learn front and back floating as well as basic swim actions.
Level 2 is for ages 5 and up to develop fundamental skills like jumping into water, treading water, rolling over and combining strokes.
Level 3 develops swim strokes and adds breathing techniques. Swimmers learn to jump and dive in the deep end and begin to learn water survival skills.
Level 4 is the most advanced level and concentrates on further developing swim strokes, swimming under water and jumping from heights.
Parent and tot classes are also offered for ages 6 months to 3 years. Both parent and child can develop comfort in the water and learn basic water safety rules and techniques.
