City Council supports staff’s plan to pursue construction of a new facility.
City Manager Ron Olson provided a status update regarding Bob Gilmore Senior Center at tonight’s City Council Workshop and received Council’s support to pursue developing a plan to construct a new facility.
The Gilmore Center was closed in February when a building assessment revealed significant structural concerns. Operations were relocated to the Community Center pending a full analysis by a structural engineer. The expert determined that planned renovations to the building are no longer feasible and that the building is unsafe for continued use.
The Gilmore Center opened in 1977 to provide a facility with free activities and programs for seniors ages 55 and older. For more than 40 years, seniors have used the center for recreation and fellowship.
Senior programs will remain at the Community Center for the foreseeable future. Staff will work to accommodate as many regular activities as possible including the lunch program.
Killeen Community Center is located at 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Gilmore Center operations are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours are extended to 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
Lions Club Park Senior Center is located at 1700 E. Stan Schlueter Loop. It is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours are extended to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Senior center memberships are free for residents age 55 and older and their spouses.
More information including the current schedule of activities for both locations is available at killeentexas.gov/seniors.
