Project, which also includes LED retrofit of entire airport, made possible by FAA Grant
KILLEEN, Texas (March 25, 2025) – The Killeen Regional Airport (GRK) is hosting a ribbon cutting for of its Solar Integrated Covered Parking Project on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 2 p.m.
“This is a significant step forward for the Killeen Regional Airport,” said Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King. “Not only does it enhance the experience for our travelers, but by investing in solar energy and modernizing our airport infrastructure, we are creating a brighter, more sustainable future for our community.”
The project was funded in part by a $5,000,000 Federal Aviation Administration Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program Grant and combined with contributions from the Aviation Department’s Customer Facility Charge. The $7,018,065.27 project includes the solar-integrated covered parking in the car rental and short-term parking areas, alongside a covered canopy extension to enhance passenger convenience, and an LED retrofit of the entire airport.
Speakers at the ribbon cutting ceremony include Mayor Nash-King, Airport Executive Director Mike Wilson and an executive from Ameresco, Inc., who installed the solar panels.
“This project provides an excellent upgrade to the customer experience and to those using the Killeen Regional Airport by providing covered parking options but will also decreases the Airport’s operational budget by lowering our energy costs,” said Wilson.
The solar-integrated parking lot project was granted to Ameresco, a global leader in energy solutions. The Massachusetts-based company has completed solar projects for major sporting venues, major international airports and municipalities and corporations across the globe.
