[ARCHIVED] Killeen Solid Waste division experiencing temporary pick-up delays, hiring event is next week

Hiring Fair to assist with staffing shortage

KILLEEN, Texas (June 6, 2022) – Killeen Solid Waste customers will experience temporary delays in residential trash collection this month as the division experiences an extreme staffing shortage.

Citizens have seen one-day delays in their normal trash day pickup, but Solid Waste leaders say that if a resident’s container is not serviced on their regularly-scheduled collection day, the resident should leave the container curbside to be picked up the following day. If it has not been serviced the next day, please reach out directly to the Solid Waste division.

Solid Waste is diligently working to fill vacant positions by hosting interviews weekly, and will be conducting a Hiring Event on Wednesday, June 15 for Equipment Operators and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Drivers. The event is at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center from 10a.m. – 3p.m. Pay begins at $17.35 an hour with full benefits.

Applicants should bring a copy of their resume or job history, along with three references. Attendees can apply, interview and receive a conditional job offer, all in the same day, if qualified.

Currently, Solid Waste crews are averaging 12 hours a day and weekend hours in order to service all residential containers.

Curbside bulk trash collection was suspended in the City of Killeen from the week of May 30 to Sept. 30 2022 to help combat the staffing shortage and high turnover. Citizens still have access to the City’s Transfer Station (12200 State Highway 195) where they can dispose of up to 300 pounds of bulk items once a month, free of charge.

The suspension means that no additional bags around the trash container will be collected, including lawn clippings. Brush will still be collected, but only the container will be serviced.

For more information about our Department of Public Works’ Solid Waste division, including the Transfer Station, Recycling Center and holiday trash collection changes, please visit www.killeentexas.gov/SolidWaste or call (254) 501-7785 or email sw-info@killeentexas.gov.
