[ARCHIVED] City of Killeen breaks ground on apartment complex in north Killeen

groundbreaking

368-unit complex sits on 22 acres of land

City of Killeen Mayor Jose Segarra and City Councilmembers helped break ground on a 368-unit apartment complex on Jan. 13, signaling growth and revitalization in the North Killeen area.

“It is an exciting time for the City to see this project get off the ground,” Mayor Segarra said. “For many years, we’ve been trying to figure out how we can do something on the north side that is going to revitalize, re-energize and we as a city can’t do it by ourselves. This will have a tremendous positive impact in our northside and will help spur more growth that area.”

The site sits on about 22 acres of land at the corner of WS Young Drive and Veterans Boulevard. The complex will consist of 16, three-story residential buildings, as well as a clubhouse, pool, fitness center, internet café and dog park. If all stays on schedule, the first residents will be able to move in within the next 12 months.

The complex is named “Robinson42” after Jackie Robinson, the first African American man to play major league baseball. The project is a part of a partnership with the NRP Group, with the City of Killeen’s Public Facility Corporation as the lead.

Fifty percent of the units will be available to tenants whose income is less than 80% of the area median income. $82,000 will be funded to the City’s Parks division to partially pay for the improvement of Conder Park, which is adjacent to the project.

The NRP Group said they were pleased and ready to greenlight the project despite increased construction costs.

“Hopefully people will see the results of what this partnership is going to do to this city and especially our north side,” Mayor Segarra said.
