[ARCHIVED] Killeen mayor recognizes MLK “Dream Weekend” organizers, events

Several local groups unite to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend

KILLEEN, Texas (Jan. 12, 2022) – Mayor Jose Segarra is recognizing several, local organizations who are uniting to remember Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in celebrations from Friday, Jan. 14 – Monday, Jan. 17 with the theme, “The Dream Weekend: Keeping the Dream Alive.”

Mayor Segarra presented a proclamation just before last night’s City Council meeting. The groups consist of the Innovation Black Chamber, the Killeen branch of the NAACP, Village United, Enclave Killeen, So Natural, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s Kappa Sigma Lambda chapter and the Step Up Fest which hosts a high school step show.

“We want to say thank you for all that you do within our community and thank you for uniting and coming together,” Mayor Segarra said. “I encourage everybody that lives in our city to be a part of these festivities and recognize that great organizations are putting this on.”

The MLK-themed activities include an MLK Peace March that begins at City Hall, a Culture on the Square entertainment event in Historic Downtown, a high school step show, an oratorical contest, a brunch and virtual events.

Attached are photos from last night’s event, as well as flyers from the Innovation Black Chamber and the NAACP. For event questions, please contact Ronnie Russell, President of the Innovation Black Chamber at innovationblackchamber@gmail.com, or TaNeika Driver-Moultrie, Killeen NAACP President, at tnd2475@gmail.com.

“Dr. Martin Luther King—his vision was ‘I have a dream,” Russell said. “He didn’t have a vision. He started with a vision, but he told the people he had a dream. A vision is something that you can see internally with an outward approach, but a dream is something that you do that is going to be influential and have the ability to captivate the audience and the community of people for a lifetime.”
