[ARCHIVED] The City of Killeen remembers September 11th, 20 years later

Mayor, chiefs speak about heroes, tragedy

KILLEEN, Texas (Sep. 10, 2021) – The City of Killeen released a video today featuring Mayor Jose Segarra, Fire Chief Jim Kubinski and Police Chief Chuck Kimble remembering the courage and legacy of the fallen, 20 years after the September 11th attacks.

The video also features officer Derrick Burleson, who was serving in the Army during the 9/11 tragedy. Mayor Segarra and Chief Kimble also both served in the military before the attacks.

“The second that I saw and processed everything, I knew that firefighters were going to die,” Chief Kubinski said.

When speaking of the First Responders at Ground Zero, Chief Kimble said, “They were running the opposite direction that other people were running from and you kind of knew the fate that would happen to them.”

Each leader recalled memories from that day and talked about how they are honoring First Responders and Service Members today.

“This just makes you appreciate what they (First Responders/Service Members) go through just to make sure that we as citizens are taken care of,” Mayor Segarra said. “They are truly all of our heroes.”

The video can be found on all of the City’s social media channels and here is the direct YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7x0WnmFsf0

Additionally, Killeen Firefighters participated in a 110-story Stair Climb remembrance at the Fountain Place in Dallas last weekend, and they will be apart of another 9/11 Stair Climb at the Wildcat Stadium in Temple at 7 tomorrow morning. https://www.facebook.com/119198378143050/posts/4479799338749577/

Tomorrow, our Parks and Recreation Services Department is hosting a “Zumba to Remember” workout that will consist of nine different workout sessions for 11 minutes each. Councilwoman Nina Cobb will open the event with a few sentiments and a moment of silence. This is at the Family Recreation Center from 9a.m -11a.m. and everyone is asked to wear red, white and blue.

The Fire Department, Mayor Segarra, City Council members and Chief Kimble also participated in the annual Freedom Walk today at Ellison High School.
