Public is invited to honor the lives lost on Nov. 5, 2009 at Fort Cavazos, formerly Fort Hood
KILLEEN, Texas (October 21, 2024) – The Friends of November 5, 2009 Memorial Committee is inviting the community to remember those whose lives were taken on Nov. 5, 2009 during a tragic shooting on post.
The 15th anniversary ceremony of the tragedy is on Nov. 5 at 9a.m. at the Fort Hood Memorial Pavilion (3601 South WS Young Drive), beside the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.
On Nov. 5, 2009, 13 lives were taken and more than 30 were injured by a servicemember at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center on post, and each year we honor the victims, reflect on their legacy and support the families of a community that will forever be impacted by this tragedy.
“We invite the community to join together in unity, ensuring the memories of these fallen individuals live on forever,” Mayor Debbie Nash-King said.
The ceremony will include Brig. Gen. Robert Born, Deputy Commanding General- Support for the Fort Cavazos 1st Cavalry Division, a moment of silence, listing the names of the fallen and wounded and a joint honor guard consisting of the Killeen Police and Killeen Fire Departments. Family members of the fallen will be present. Jasmin Caldwell of KCEN Channel 6 News will emcee the event and local, state and federal dignitaries are invited.
The “Friends of November 5, 2009 Memorial Committee” is comprised of Mayor Nash-King, City of Killeen officials, Fort Cavazos officials, community leaders and former Killeen Mayor, Tim Hancock.
