[ARCHIVED] Community invited to discussion on future west Killeen parks

Community Meeting West Killeen Parks_Updated 7-29-24

Meeting will cover the amenities in natural area parks and trails

KILLEEN, Texas (July 30, 2024) – The City of Killeen is seeking feedback from the community on the future of potential natural area park amenities in west Killeen. The meeting will take place on Friday, Aug. 23 from 6-8p.m. inside the Haynes Elementary School cafeteria (3309 West Canadian River Loop).

The main topics of discussion include the Bunny Trail Passive Recreation Park (33 acres) and West Killeen Natural Area and Trail (23 acres). The areas have twin peaks at elevations of 1,096 feet and 1,128 feet above sea level and have a close proximity to neighborhoods and schools.

Citizens are asked to complete a 12-question survey that includes questions about park amenities (bike racks, water fountains, restrooms, pavilions and picnic tables, fitness stations, shade structures, shaded seating, etc.), trail surfacing (gravel, concrete, stone, natural wood pathway preferences), signage and natural play element preferences (climbing structures, balancing logs, boulders, hills, ziplines, etc.).

Residents also have the option to add in their own ideas of what they’d like to see at future parks. The survey is available at www.KilleenTexas.gov/Parks and will close on Friday, Aug. 30.

The future Bunny Trail Passive Recreation Park would be located next to Haynes Elementary school, at the end of Newcastle Drive or Great Divide Road. West Killeen Nature Area and Trail would be located next to Roy J. Smith Middle School, off of John Helen Drive. The acceptance of this land was approved by councilmembers in March 2024, as a part of a future Parkland Dedication agreement. The Killeen Parks and Open Space Master Plan identifies properties to develop additional neighborhood-scaled and community parks in the western side of the city and areas of need.

In addition to the hiking and trails, the City hope residents will enjoy the scenic views, natural beauty and observing the natural wildlife.

Killeen has 23 parks and 27 playgrounds, which can be found at www.KilleenTexas.gov/Parks. For questions, residents may call (254) 501-6390.
