Competitive grant issued as part of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program
Skylark Field (ILE) will be awarded a $1.5 million grant under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg recently announced.
Skylark Field is the City of Killeen’s general aviation airport and serves private as well as corporate pilots in the Killeen and Central Texas communities.
“The grant funds will be combined with the $2.7 million CO bond that the City Council previously approved to complete the new terminal building, ramp improvements and vehicle parking improvements,” Killeen Executive Director of Aviation, Mike Wilson, said.
Nearly $1 billion was awarded to 114 airports in the grants, which go into effect in fiscal year 2024 (October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024). The funding is from the Airport Terminal Act, one of three aviation programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The law provides $1 billion annually for five years for Airport Terminal Program grants. In total, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will provide $25 billion to modernize our country’s airport infrastructure.
This is the second time in three years that Killeen has been selected for the competitive grant. Last year, Killeen Regional Airport (GRK), the city’s primary commercial airport, was awarded a $5 million grant that is being used to fund a complete LED retrofit of the entire airport campus (terminal, parking lot, support buildings, etc.); installation of a solar intergraded covered parking in the car rental parking area, as well as a portion of the short-term parking lot; and a covered walkway from the terminal to the car rental lot.
