[ARCHIVED] Killeen Consumer Confidence Report confirms excellent water quality

No testing violations noted in 2021

KILLEEN, Texas (July 13, 2022) The City of Killeen has released its 2021 Consumer Confidence Report, which analyzes the drinking water quality. The document provides the public with important information regarding the quality and safety of their drinking water, and the analysis confirms the City of Killeen had no water quality violations in the 2021 calendar year.

Highly-training professionals perform extensive monitoring and testing of the city’s water system throughout the year to confirm its compliance with federal and state regulations. Tests measure levels of chemical and biological contaminants to ensure that Killeen’s water is safe to drink.

Belton Lake is the source of Killeen’s water. Bell County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 (WCID) treats the water from the lake, then provides it to the City of Killeen to provide to its customers, who are residents and businesses.

Some drinking water, both tap and bottled, may be reasonably expected to contain small amounts of some contaminants, but the presence does not necessarily indicate the water poses a health risk. Measurements are established to determine whether a risk exists. The report details all measured contaminants with minimum, maximum and average levels. Killeen’s water met or exceeded all standards in 2021.

The Environmental Protection Agency has regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in tap water to ensure it is safe to drink, and the Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water, which must provide the same protection for public health.

Water quality can be compromised by natural and manmade causes, so it is important that daily precautions are taken. Common causes of water pollution include not cleaning up pet waste, over-fertilizing yards, allowing auto leaks to persist and illegally disposing of substances like paint, oils and chemicals. Proper cleaning and disposal of these substances can help protect our drinking water.

The 2021 Consumer Confidence Report was distributed in the June hard copy water bills and is currently available online at www.KilleenTexas.gov/Water
