City of Killeen Opens Warming Center Ahead of Weekend Cold

Collaborative effort with Friends in Crisis provides shelter for residents facing extreme cold.

KILLEEN, Texas (Jan. 16, 2026) – The City of Killeen, in partnership with Friends in Crisis, will open a warming center as temperatures are expected to drop across the area this weekend.

Friends in Crisis, 412 E. Sprott St., will be open to all community members in need of a safe, warm place, including those without heat or experiencing power outages. The warming center will operate:

  • Friday, Jan. 16, from 3 p.m. until Saturday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m.
  • Saturday, Jan. 17, from 3 p.m. until Sunday, Jan. 18, at 8 a.m.

City policy requires warming centers to open when temperatures or wind chill values are forecast to reach 32 degrees or lower.

Residents who wish to donate supplies may contact the City of Killeen Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management at em-coordinator@killeentexas.gov
