Killeen Animal Services Shares Holiday Pet Safety Tips

Offering tips and guidance for a safe, pet-friendly holiday season.

City News Posted on December 01, 2025

KILLEEN, Texas (Dec. 1, 2025) – As temperatures drop and holiday celebrations begin, the City of Killeen Animal Services Department is reminding residents to take extra steps to keep their pets safe, warm, and stress-free throughout the season.

The holidays bring unique risks for household pets, including cold weather, unfamiliar visitors, and decorative hazards. Killeen Animal Services encourages families to plan ahead to ensure their pets stay protected.

“Small precautions can make a big difference during the winter months,” Killeen Animal Services Director Amanda Moore said. “Whether it’s keeping pets warm, avoiding holiday hazards or providing a quiet space, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping them safe and healthy.”

Holiday Pet Safety Tips

  • Keep pets warm and indoors. Freezing temperatures can be dangerous. Bring pets inside during cold weather and provide warm bedding away from drafts. Limit outdoor time, especially for short-haired, senior or ill pets.
  • Avoid hazardous holiday foods. Chocolate, candy, bones, onions, grapes and many holiday dishes can be toxic. Keep all food and trash out of reach.
  • Use caution with decorations. Tinsel, ornaments, ribbons, candles and electrical cords can pose choking, shock or fire hazards. Place decorations higher and unplug cords when not in use.
  • Provide a quiet space. Holiday visitors and noise can overwhelm pets. Offer a calm, separate area with water, bedding and toys.
  • Prevent escapes. Frequent door openings increase the risk of pets slipping outside. Ensure pets have ID tags and microchips with updated information.
  • Prepare for travel. If traveling with pets, pack food, medication, blankets and supplies. Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle.
