City of Killeen Announces Candidate Filing Period for Upcoming Election

KILLEEN, Texas (Jan. 9, 2026) – The City of Killeen Office of the City Secretary is reminding residents interested in running for municipal office that the candidate filing period for the upcoming May 2, 2026 General Election will open Wednesday, Jan. 14, and close Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, by 5:00 p.m. The election will be held for the purpose of electing a mayor and three at-large councilmembers.

Individuals seeking a place on the ballot must submit all required paperwork during the filing period to be eligible. Information on candidate eligibility requirements, filing forms and election procedures is available on the City of Killeen’s 2026 General Election webpage.

Candidates for mayor and city council must meet the qualifications for elective office as outlined in the Texas Election Code.

A councilmember who no longer meets the required qualifications, fails to attend three consecutive regular council meetings without being excused by the council, or is convicted of a felony while in office shall immediately forfeit the position.

Local elections play an important role in shaping the future of the community by giving residents a direct voice in city governance. The city encourages qualified individuals to consider public service and participate in the local electoral process.

The election will be conducted in accordance with state and local election laws to ensure a fair, transparent, and accessible process for candidates and voters.
