KILLEEN, Texas (Dec. 20, 2022) – The City of Killeen is urging citizens to begin to prepare for cold weather before prolonged freezing temperatures hit the area.
Thursday an arctic cold front will be moving through our area bringing extremely cold temperatures through the holiday weekend. No precipitation or roadway impacts are expected. But as the temperatures are forecasted to remain below freezing until Saturday, residents are still urged to remember to protect the 3 Ps (people, pets, and pipes).
Remember to bring in pets and vulnerable plants from the outdoors, and ensure your pipes are winterized. This includes covering exterior faucets, dripping indoor faucets, insulating back flow pipes, and turning off sprinklers. In addition, check on elderly and other friends and relatives you know to make sure they have a warm shelter.
Residents are also urged to take caution outdoors as prolonged exposure to the freezing weather can cause frostbite and/or hypothermia, so it is recommended to dress in layers, cover exposed skin and limit time spent outdoors.
The City of Killeen is actively monitoring the weather and will be planning to open a warming center later this week. An announcement with the time and location will be sent when finalized.
