Work is part of ongoing milling and overlay project for eight streets, 6.41 miles
KILLEEN, Texas (Nov. 30, 2022) – The City of Killeen’s Department of Public Works’ Transportation Division is updating residents on milling and overlay roadwork projects that will affect eight roads and 6.41 miles over the next, few months, weather permitting.
The work began at the end of October 2022 and all road projects are listed below. The first two road projects were completed in seven days and two days respectively. The roadwork will go in the order listed when permitted, and each project will begin once the previous one is complete. Once milling and overlay phases are complete, crews will also perform pavement markings.
During this work, personnel and equipment must enter the roadway to complete the work and possible lane and full road closures may occur. There will be a series of traffic control devices in place and crews will have traffic detoured around the work sites. Motorists should anticipate delays and are asked to use caution and obey traffic control devices.

Milling is to plane, plane and texture, existing asphalt concrete pavement, asphalt-stabilized base, or concrete.
Overlay is a paving method of applying a new layer of asphalt to deteriorating surfaces. These services can be completed year-round, except in rain and under 50 degrees.
The slurry seal process is scheduled to begin by summer 2023, as warmer weather is better for the surface treatment process to allow for a quicker cure of the materials.
Slurry Seal is a thin asphalt overlay / seal coat that will fill in small cracks and surface imperfections to give the roadway a uniform color and texture. Most importantly, it seals the pavement, which prevents the infiltration of water, which is the most frequent cause of pavement failure.
