Event is an effort to show citizens, downtown businesses the City’s support & dedication to improvement
KILLEEN, Texas (November 7, 2022) – More than three dozen City of Killeen employees have been working all day to help cleanup and beautify Historic Downtown today.
Volunteers from all 13 departments started at 8a.m. picking up trash, removing weeds, trimming overgrowth, pressure washing sidewalks, sanitizing benches, blowing leaves, and doing light gardening.
Employees dedicated at least one hour throughout the day, and the Recreation Services Department and Public Works Department had employees helping with the cleanup event all day.
The effort was the idea of the Downtown Revitalization Director, Kate Kizito, and was organized by the Development Services Department.
“It’s a chance to show our citizens and our downtown businesses that not only do we work down here alongside you, we also care about what’s happening in our Historic Downtown and we care about how it looks, and we’ll do what it takes until it shows some consistent improvement,” Kizito said. “This won’t be the last event.”
The City of Killeen aims to conduct these clean-ups monthly using its own staff of 1,300+ employees.
Other measures that will be taken include having officials tag cars and trailers that have been abandoned in parking lots, having Code Enforcement do sweeps of downtown, and increasing the police presence during night hours to limit trespassing.
