[ARCHIVED] New Killeen councilmembers to be sworn in May 17, following city election

Mayor, three councilmembers to take oath of office during Special City Council Meeting

KILLEEN, Texas (May 12, 2022) – The City of Killeen will hold a swearing in ceremony for the mayor, two new councilmembers and an incumbent on Tuesday, May 17, during a Special City Council meeting at 5p.m. in City Hall Chambers (101 N. College Street), following the May 7 election.

Mayor Debbie Nash-King became mayor on March 25, due to former Mayor Jose Segarra resigning from his termed-out seat, so he could seek election as an at-large councilmember, as stipulated in the City Charter. Nash-King received 72% of the votes to remain mayor of Killeen.

Segarra, current at-large councilmember, Ken Wilkerson, and newcomer, Ramon Alvarez won the three, at-large seats on the council, receiving 23%, 21% and 17% of the votes respectively. All results were posted to the Bell County website.

There were also 13 propositions to amend the City Charter on the City of Killeen ballot and all but two -- Propositions H and J -- passed.

During the Special Council meeting, council will canvass votes and the Oath of Office will be administered to the newly-elected officials. The agenda item of adopting the ordinance to canvas returns is a state law requirement where results are recognized and made official.

During the May 17 meeting, outgoing councilmembers, Rick Williams and Mellisa Brown are also scheduled to be recognized for their service.

The final item on Tuesday’s special meeting agenda is to elect a Mayor Protem. The regularly-scheduled Council Workshop will immediately follow the Special City Council Meeting.

The at-large councilmembers join the following District councilmembers: Jessica Gonzalez (District #1), Riakos Adams (District #2), Nina Cobb (District #3) and Michael Boyd District #4. Adams was appointed to his seat by council in March 2022, following the vacancy left by Nash-King.

City of Killeen elections for city council district members are held in May of each odd year. Elections for mayor and city council at-large members are held in May of each even year.
