Fire Training Academy

Fire Training Building ExteriorKilleen Fire Department is now offering a fire academy for individuals interested in a career in the fire service. The curriculum for the fire academy is the approved Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter Course. Successful completion will enable an individual to take the Texas Commission on Fire Protection certification exam, as well as, meet or exceed the necessary qualifications of employment with many fire departments. The fire academy will operate 2 classes per year. The classes have a maximum of 30 students per class and are filling up quickly. Academy Training Classes

Thank you for your interest in the Killeen Fire Department and the Killeen Fire Academy.  The Academy is separated into two parts:

Texas Commission on Fire Protection Approved Basic Fire Suppression

  • Tuition cost: $3,500
  • Class schedule: Monday through Friday, 0745 to 1800 (two Saturdays)
  • Duration of class: 16 Weeks
  • Uniform needed:
    • Navy blue pants (no Jeans)
    • Black shoes or boots
    • Black belt (no elaborate belt buckles)
    • Blue Academy t-shirts (available at Academy for $15)
  • Books: purchased by cadet (check with academy staff for current books required)
  • TCoFP test fees: $85, paid by Cadet
  • Uniform issued:
    • Two grey dress shirts (must be returned upon leaving class)
    • Two academy name tags

Texas Department of State Health Services Basic Emergency Medical Technician

  • Tuition cost: $750
  • Class schedule: Monday through Friday, 0800 to 1700
  • Duration of class: 12 weeks long
  • Uniform needed:
    • Navy blue pants (no jeans)
    • Black shoes or boots
    • Black belt (no elaborate belt buckles)
    • Blue academy t-shirts (available at the Academy $15)
  • Uniform issued:
    • Two grey dress shirts (must be returned upon leaving class)
    • Academy identification card (must be returned upon leaving class)
  • Books: Purchased by cadet (check with academy staff for current books required)
  • Stethoscope is included as part of your tuition

Application Process

Applications (PDF) are available at the Academy from 0800 to 1600 hours. A physical with 5 panel drug screen is required along with a driver’s history from the state that your driver’s license is with. A background check will be required to be done by Identico. Upon completion of this process, a $400 deposit will be needed to reserve a seat in the class. Class size is limited to 30 individuals.

The Killeen Fire Department is registered with the Veterans Administration so you can use your G.I. Bill to attend this training. Dorms are available on a very limited basis and staying in them is not required.
