Construction kicked off in August 2012 to replace sidewalks, revamp streets, add irrigated landscaping, install new lighting, install a mid-block plaza, and add decorative crosswalks along a portion of six streets in the historic core. The streetscaping improvements will connect to the Andy K. Well Hike and Bike Trail through an extension of the trail from its current location next to the Killeen Community Center.
“When you start to make things look nicer, people begin to take more pride in the area and property values go up,” said Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce President John Crutchfield. “When that starts to happen, people feel more secure investing in downtown...this streetscaping project is a very important step forward.”
Funding for the trail extension and streetscaping improvements came from a $2,557,897 TxDOT enhancement grant and general obligation bond funds.
