Kenneth Hawthorne assumed the role of interim fire chief May 31, 2016. He is a Killeen native and has spent his 39-year career in service to Killeen Fire Department.
Chief Hawthorne began his career with the Killeen Fire Department in 1977 as a fire rescue officer. In 1992, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He served as deputy fire chief in 2004 before being promoted to assistant fire chief in 2015.
He completed the Texas Engineering and Extension Service (TEEX) Fire School at Texas A&M and holds a number of fire certifications.
Chief Hawthorne's awards and recognitions include being named VFW Bob Gray Post 9192 Firefighter of the Year in 1981 and 1990 and the One Spirit Exchange Club Longest Serving Firefighter in 2008. He has earned the Safe Driver Bar and Fire Service Bar for 35 years. In his distinguished career, he has also received the Civic Achievement Bar, Certificate of Merit Bar, Meritorious Conduct Bar and Firefighter Commendation Bar.
